There is an alternate short route to reach Pigeon Nest from Boone and GPS default route. NC-105 S towards Banner Elk -->Turn right to Broadstone Rd via Valle Crucis --> Turn left onto NC-194 S--> Turn Left Pigeon Roost Rd

It's a scenic route with many turns, bumps and narrow roads. Avoid this route if you are coming with kids who have motion sickness and during snow season.
